The Golf Course

The golf course designed by top golfer Ian Woosnam in combination with Mastergolf is perhaps the most beautiful in the Netherlands. The design of the course makes optimal use of the very hilly terrain – with differences in altitude up to 14 meters, has challenging water hazards and also offers the non-golfer an unimaginable view from the large terrace of the clubhouse.
The holes are very different, both in layout and in terms of challenge, from an extremely long hole without bunkers to a very short hole with no less than eight bunkers surrounding the green, from narrow straight holes with descending fairways to artful doglegs with sometimes even blind shots. The greens are large, fast and very well thought out, designed in such a way that a large number of exciting pin positions are possible. In addition the greens are alternately protected by water hazards, strategically constructed bunkers and serious height differences, or a combination of both.
Between the holes there is a natural hilly landscape, so almost everywhere on the course you have the pleasant feeling of being the only on the course. That pleasant feeling is enhanced by the beauty of many materials used, such as the beautiful Portuguese natural stones of the paths, the facing and the indication of the holes. The clubhouse is also largely made of this beautiful stone, making everything on and around the complex a beautiful and harmonious whole.

The Architect

The Architect

The course was designed by top golfer Ian Woosnam in collaboration with Mastergolf. Woosnam wasn’t naturally built for golf with his modest height of just 1.64 meters, but the small man from Wales still managed to reach the top and become the world number one. In addition to his 47 professional victories worldwide, the ‘Wee Welshman’ was awarded the green jacket at Augusta National in 1991 after winning The Masters. This makes The International the first golf course in the Netherlands designed by a Major winner.

In addition to his individual performance, Ian Woosnam has also proved to be a great team player in the Ryder Cup. The biennial event where the best golfers from Europe and the United States go head-to-head was right up his alley. He participated eight times as a player and gained 16.5 points from 31 matches. He gained more than 90% of his points in the foursomes and fourballs with various partners. In 2006 he was allowed to lead as captain of the European Team. He did so with full commitment, and the final score of 18.5 (EU) – 9.5 (US) matched the largest victory ever by a European team.

All of this knowledge and experience is reflected in Woosnam’s strengths as a golf course designer. Combined with the expertise of Mastergolf, his design vision helped shape The International into a top-tier course—one that can host world-class tournaments while still offering an enjoyable experience for beginners.
